School Programs

Camp Tyler Outdoor School

Students will attend Day Investigations in a 3 day continuous program including:

 

Aquatic Biology (5th - 8th Graders)

  • Grab your rubber boots and nets and investigate the ponds at Camp Tyler to determined their health and how it affects our ecosystem.

Orienteering and GPS (5th - 8th Graders)

  • Map reading, Compass and GPS Unit skills are taught prior to groups utilizing skills to find locations marked by latitude and longitude readings.  Teambuilding exercises are built in to emphasize the importance of working as a team to achieve goals.

You/Bug/Me (4th - 5th Graders)

  • Students will collect, study and explore the world of an insect, their importance in our food web and unique characteristics.  They will hike into a variety of ecosystems to capture, examine and share their findings with their class.

GLOBE-Land Cover Study (4th - 5th Graders)

  • Explore and collect data using science tools in our 50 meter Forest square. Students will discover the elements of determining the health and life within this ecosystem.

Field Day Investigations

  • Students come for a one day program to participate in a field study as described above or one developed according to the teacher’s need. All programs are taught in alignment with the following TEKS objectives:
  • Demonstration of safe practices during field investigations.
  • Conservation of resources and recycling of materials.
  • Use of Scientific Method.
  • Utilizing a variety of tools and methods in conducting science inquiries.
  • Investigation of cycles and processes within simple systems.
  • Discovery of changes occurring within cycles.
  • Demonstrating forms of energy including reflection and refraction of light.
  • Comparing and describing adaptive characteristics of organisms in an ecosystem.
  • Observing how past actions affect present and future events.
  • Interpreting natural world discoveries which include Earth materials and objects in the sky.

Bring your class for the day to discover and experience outdoor learning at Camp Tyler.

Day Programs include but are not limited to the following

Farm Tours ( Pre-K and K's)

  • Students visit the farm at Camp Tyler and learn about the importance of animals, crops and family on the farm and how it relates to their world.  Students participate in feeding, grooming, planting and other activities experienced in farm life.

Books Alive (1st -2nd Graders)

  • Students rotate through stations set up at the farm, focusing on a particular animal and coordinating story book read about the animal.  They groom/feed and learn about the significance of each animal.

Eco-Ag (K- 5th)

Classes explore different grade appropriate aspects of plant and animal life, connections between the two and value of sustainable agriculture to human survival.

Pioneer Village (3rd -5th)

Rotate groups to village stations where students participate in activities such as candle dipping, rope making and wood work.

All-Day Programs are from 9:00am until 2pm. Groups are welcome to bring sack lunches and drinks or hotdogs and fixings for a cookout at the fire pit. Prices are $15.00 a person per day, and include a Camp Tyler Instructor, equipment and materials.

 

Half-Day Programs are from 9:00-12:00. Groups are welcome to bring sack lunches and drinks or hotdogs and fixings for a cookout at the fire pit. Prices are $7.00 a person per day and include a Camp Tyler Instructor.
